Take Responsibility For How You Are Heard

When we say things to others, others don’t hear exactly what we say. Words are one part of communication, but non-verbal parts, tone, and sometimes even exact word choices are vastly different between people. It is very possible that something we mean as a compliment can resonate with another person as something completely different. Be aware of this disconnect as you deal with others.
While in a perfect world we always get to explain ourselves and make sure everyone hears exactly what we mean, the world does not always work like this. We may say something which upsets someone else without even meaning it, and not even get a great chance to truly be heard as we mean.
Take responsibility for how you are heard. Don’t be afraid to ask "what did you hear?" Be prepared for something completely different.
