Yesterday I was watching a comedy show called "The Last Man On Earth." In it, he thinks he is the last man alive for about 2 years until another woman surfaces. He finds her annoying and unattractive, but thinking she is the last woman on earth, they get married. Shortly after this "wedding" they discover another woman who is clearly more suitable for him. Subsequent episodes appear to deal with the repercussions of this choice.
This is a silly show with the sole intent of comedy, and it is debatable whether they are succeeding at that, but there is an interesting thought in here for everybody. Often in conversations with people I hear things like "it was the only job hiring me" or "it is all I can afford" or "it was all I could find to eat" or "I didn’t have any luck dating anyone else." This should never, ever be a reason for selecting somebody or something to be a part of your life. If you ever feel like you are facing a complete lack of choices, then it is time to find a way to expand your choices, it is not time to settle for the only thing available.
The fact of the matter is you are not the last person on earth, and thus there are always choices available to you. If you feel limited with your options then examine your context, there are always options if you are willing to look. Do the work and change yourself, create options which are more appealing to you.
Never say "the only." Until you are the last person on earth, it is never the truth.
